C.L. Hubbs erected Cubanichthys to relocate the known Cuban species Fundulus cubensis, described by Carl Eigenmann in 1903, to its own genus. Cubanichthys cubensis was the only species in the genus and of course also the type species.
Parenti (1981) suggested that also Chriopeoides pengelleyi described by H.W. Fowler in 1939 was to include in this genus but this was not supported by other scientists.
