This very old genus was described in 1879 already and the name was given in honor to the American ichthyologist David Star Jordan.
The genus name Jordanella is discussed and is seen as encompassing to the genus Garmanella as a synonyme to it.
Jordanella, Garmanella and Floridichthys form a clade of genera related to Cyprinodon based on osteological characters and by DNA studies related to Cyprinodon, Cualac and Megupsilon.
The genus is monotypic and the type species is Jordanella floridae.

Tarleton Hoffman Bean, has the distinction of being the first Curator of Fishes at the Smithsonian Institution. As an effective manager of collections, a field collector, a researcher, and a prolific writer, he contributed greatly to the development of American ichthyology. He was also an internationally known authority on fish culture, the artificial propagation of game and food fishes.
