The type locality of this beautiful but undetectable species is near Primavera, south of the Amazone delta, Para state, northeastern Brasil.

It was first discovered by Gilberto Campello Brasil on September 8, 1974.

After Costa (2004) the species is related to Kryptolebias brasiliensis. It belongs to the speciesgroup with K. brasiliensis and K. sepia.

In my opinion it forms the first proved link between the coastal populations of Kryptolebias in the southeast (K. brasiliensis) and more to the north in Surinam (K. sepia.) I also believe there will be more discoveries in the future that prove there is a whole lineage of relatives along the coast and wider interor coastal areas.

I am desparately looking for a possibility to obtain this species alive. For that I like to know somebody who is living near the spot this fish lives. If anybody has an image or has acces to eggs of K. campelloi, please contact me immediately. Also looking for preserved specimen.

No records of breeding or behaviour. Not available in the hobby today (july 2006)
