Also in 1998 described by Dr. Wilson Costa was this beautiful monotypic genus with the type species Micromoema xiphophora.

Dr. Lothar Seegers sees the creation of an new genus for this single species as not very plausible. He stated in his Aqualog book that the species, previousely described as Pterolebias xiphophorus by Thomerson and Taphorn in 1992 also could stay in the genus Pterolebias. In his opinion it could also be placed in Aphyolebias as the differences between both genera are still unclear to many scientists. Dr Jean Huber sees the genus Micromoema as an valid genus that is close related to Moema and is in his point of view possible to be seen as subgenus of the genus Moema.

Micromoema is found along the border from south west Venezuela to Columbia in the upper Orinoco drainage. It is living with the genera Terranatos, Rivulus, Rachovia and Renova.
