History

Papiliolebias hatinne is described recently in 2009 from a temporary pond 5 km north of Embarcación, in the río Bermejo basin, Province of Salta, Argentina

The genus Papiliolebias (Costa, 1998b) is diagnosed by four synapomorphies:
1) nine pelvic fin rays. 2) unpaired fins dark blue, 3) the presence of a white stripe along the distal margin of the anal fin, and 4) a humeral metallic green spot. Both Papiliolebias share the synapomorphies 3 and 4.
Nine pelvic fin rays are present exclusively in P. bitteri since P. hatinne has 7 - 8. That characteristic for P. bitteri is considered plesiomorphic by Costa ( 1998a, 1998b). The unpaired fins dark blue only develop in P. bitteri as these fins are simply bluish in P. hatinne.

The given name "hatinne" means "nice" in the indigenous Chorote language. The word is used as an adjective in apposition.

Papiliolebias hatinne is known to be present in only the type locality, a temporary pond close to rio Bermejo basin at the side of Ruta Nacional 34, about 5 km north of Embarcación, Salta, Argentina.(close to 23° 15' S - 64° 07' W)

The pond was 20 m long. 6 m wide, and 1.2 to 1.5 m deep with clear
water; it's surface was almost completely covered by duckweed (Lemna sp.), floating fern (Salvinia sp.), water lettuce (Pistia), and water hyacinth (Eichornia sp.).

Reproduction

Breeding this species is difficult and for experienced aquarists. They do not need special tanks or water conditions but the eggs are very small and the fry, that will develop in the eggs in about 3 months, need to have very small plankton or infusoria in the first week or two. After that period fresh artemia nauplii can be given also. It is wise to put one male with several females in an breeding tank together. The male can be a little aggressive in his behaviour to the females. Better is it, if you have many animals, to put an group of males and females together in an bigger tank with a lot of hidingplaces and several dishes to spawn.

Eggs are put on- in- and above the substrate that should be a layer of cooked and rinsed peatmoss that is kept free of pollution. To avoid the mix with food or detritus it is advised to put the spawning medium in a low dish on the bottom. Rins it very good after collecting and store the peat in warm condition from about 25 C.
They can be very productive but still this species is not widely spread among hobbyists because of small availability and varius breeding results.
